Where We Were and Are by Zoe Pawlak

Zoe has been painting fictional landscape paintings. They are emotive passages of land and sky derived from memory and invention. The title refers to the act of remembering and the notion that imagination plays an integral role in how we situate ourselves in the present according to the places we have been in the past. Passport to the Past

Celebrate Heritage Week by learning more about the history of your community! Join us in commemorating 150 years since the proclamation of British Columbia in the Fort Langley Big House, where it all started. Pick up your "Passport to the Past" and complete it by visiting other local attractions including the Langley Centennial Museum, Derby Reach Regional Park, and the Canadian Northern Railway Museum. Completed passports will be entered into a draw to win great prizes.

What is happening to wild salmon in your community?

The Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC) invites you to a meeting at the Fort Langley Community Hall to share current information on natural and human influences on wild salmon, such as the effects of climate warming and changes in water use, land and resource use, and salmon habitat.

PFRCC Council members will be present and the meeting will include a brief presentation, but the majority of time will be spent asking participants to share their local knowledge. There is no charge to attend, but pre-registration is appreciated. To pre-register or for more information, go to PFRCC's website: www.fish.bc.ca.

Spring Break at the Fort

It's spring! Time to get your hands dirty in the sands of time at Fort Langley. Celebrate 150 years of British Columbia in our Big House, where BC was 'born'. We're offering guided tours everyday with special tours just for kids at 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. Listen to a storyteller weave a tale at 2:00 pm daily, then participate in a Fur Trade Wedding at 3:00 pm. Bring a picnic lunch and stay the whole day!

Candlelight Tours

Find yourself taken back to November 19, 1858. It is the day of BC's Proclamation and the fort is full of excitement and commotion. Share in the anticipation by helping the fort get ready for this historic event. Experience the stories of this momentous occasion with a series of colourful vignettes as you make your way around the fort. For tickets and information please call 604-888-4956. Ramesh Ferris' Cycle to Walk Dinner

Raise funds and awareness toward the global eradication of polio, to educate about the continuing need for immunization against polio and to support the rehabilitation of polio survivors in poor countries.

On April 12, 2008, Ramesh will depart from Victoria, B.C., and travel more than 7,200 kilometres by handcycle to Cape Spear, N.L - a 7,200 km Journey. Ramesh will travel from Victoria to Tsawwassen on his first day. The second stop on his journey will be The Parish of St. George, Fort Langley. He will arrive at approximately 2:30 to 3 p.m. on April 13 and the crowd is invited to line the streets and welcome him. www.cycletowalk.com, 604-888-7782.

Community dinner being held at the Parish on April 13th at 6:00 pm as a fundraiser and encouragement for Ramesh's journey. The dinner tickets are $20 each available at St. George's office 604-888-4392 or calling Karen Saunders 604-532-2066. Mayor Kurt Alberts and wife Brenda will be in attendance.

Brigade Days

It was August 2nd, 1858 when the British Parliament passed an Act to establish the Colony of British Columbia. More than three months later the new governor came to Fort Langley to officially proclaim the Act and BC was born. Live historic dramatizations will be taking place each day. Guides and volunteers in traditional garb will demonstrate and reveal a way of life that was coming to an end as the new colony was beginning. The event runs all weekend 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, with the traditional canoe brigade arrival at the waterfront on Sunday, August 3rd at 1:00 pm.

Cranberries don't come from a can! At Fort Langley, First Nations people brought canoe loads of cranberries to trade. These were then shipped to San Francisco to be sold to gold prospectors - a vital source of vitamin C long before oranges were widely cultivated in California. Come celebrate our proud berry history by enjoying the cranberry harvest at the 13th annual Cranberry Festival in Fort Langley on October 11th. Western Canadian Rowing Championships

Fort Langley’s Bedford Channel will be the site of the inaugural Western Canadian University Rowing Championships hosted by UFV. The Western Canadian University Rowing Championships are expected to draw university teams from provinces west of Ontario including all B.C. universities with rowing programs. Boat categories range from men’s and women’s singles to up to eight rowers in a boat.

On November 19th, 1858 Governor James Douglas read a proclamation in Fort Langley's Big House declaring the territory a British Colony. Celebrate with us the birth of British Columbia at Fort Langley. Enjoy the BC 150 theatre presentation, tours, and more!

2nd Annual Village of Christmas Lighting Ceremony and Processional

The Village of Fort Langley kicks off their Christmas Season with this event. As B.C.'s oldest community, Fort Langley is about history and tradition, and our Christmas season captures the flavour and old-fashioned fun of the season. This event begin with carolers in period costumes, face painting, roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate and turkey dogs by the fire followed by the processional walk to light up the Village and the Grand Christmas Tree.

After the kick-off event on November 29, there will be many events each weekend through to January to celebrate the old-style Christmas season in Fort Langley. A full calendar of events will be posted in November.
